Manchester United are confident of signing Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld ahead of Barcelona and Chelsea according to The Metro. Alderweireld has been immense of Tottenham ever since they signed him in 2015 from Atletico but the two parties failed to agree on a contract extension. Also, reports have suggested that the relationship between Pochettino and Alderweireld has broken down. The problem for Spurs is that because of their strict wage structure they can’t compete with the top European clubs in terms of the wages they can offer their stars. We can expect similar contract situations with the likes of Eriksen, Kane and Alli in the future if Spurs continue maintain such a strict control over their wages.
Manchester United have a plethora of central defenders, but Jose Mourinho doesn’t seem to be convinced by any of them so far. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones probably are United’s two best center backs at the moment but both of them have had injury riddled season. Alderweireld’s arrival might force United to sell one of Smalling, Lindelof or Marcos Rojo as the competition for places among central defenders will become to intense.
