The Express report that Manchester United are closing in on a January transfer with Barcelona for Andre Gomes. Gomes, a central midfielder has struggled to establish himself at Barcelona since his move from Valencia last summer. And also with strong rumours suggesting that Barcelona will come back again for Coutinho, Gomes’ chances at the Camp Nou will be severely limited if they do indeed sign the Brazilian.

For Manchester United, Andre Gomes will be a good signing. They have struggled this season when Paul Pogba has been missing from their midfield. The pairing of Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic has not worked so far as both of them are not mobile and operate in a similar area of the pitch. Gomes will give them a different option and at 24, he still can grow a lot. Considering the insane prices being paid by the Premier League clubs, Gomes should be relatively cheaper considering his inability to impress at Barcelona so far.

Manchester United’s transfer strategy in the post-Ferguson era has been an incoherent mess which has seen them near the top in the spending charts but with little results on the pitch. Jose Mourinho has come under a lot of criticism for claiming that he needs to spend more if United were to compete for the title. Certainly the gap to City looks huge at the moment and United need to start spending wisely if they want to close the gap.
