Manchester United face their first real test of their pre-season tour against Manchester City on Thursday at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Both United and City have spent money and strengthened during the summer and it looks like there is no stopping them yet. Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he wants two more players where as City are still hopeful of signing Alexis Sanchez.
Mourinho has hinted that we might see the 3-5-2 formation used extensively this season by Manchester United. The 3-5-2 formation has its strengths but has some key weaknesses too.
Will Jose Mourinho switch to the 3-5-2 formation for the 2017/18 season?
Manchester United expected starting lineup against Manchester City
Whether Mourinho goes back to his trusted 4-3-3 formation or chooses to experiment, Man United need to sign a defensive midfielder. When they splurged a world record fee on Pogba, the intent was to build a side around him. But Mourinho hasn’t been able to play Pogba in his best position regularly. The lack of a solid defensive midfielder forces Pogba to play more deeply thereby restricting his influence in the final third. Signing someone like Nemanja Matic would strengthen United’s midfield immensely. A strong midfield has become a bare minimum to compete in the Champions League unlike in the days of Sir Alex when a midfield of Giggs and Carrick took United to the finals.
