Liverpool’s stunning form reversal in the second half of the season has put tremendous pressure on Manchester United as they seek to qualify for the Champions League. Manchester United are still playing badly, their star buys from the summer are horribly out of form but they still are managing to get three points. Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria are badly out of form and United need them to strike form soon. Di Maria against Sunderland had possibly one the worst matches in his career as he was hauled off during the break for Adnan Januzaj. Van Gaal’s 5-3-2 has made a return and we might see it again at the Sports Direct Arena. The 5-3-2 has struggled to excite any football fans but the defence is quite solid and United generally don’t look threatened at the back. But at the same time, the attack looks stale and uninspiring.
Wayne Rooney marked his return to the striker role with two goals against Sunderland as Ander Herrera seeks to cement his place in the side. This is a step in the right direction as Rooney’s best position is upfront and he offers something different to Radamel Falcao and Robin Van Persie. For the Colombian thought things can’t be worst and he urgently needs to find some goal scoring form if he wants to stay at Old Trafford the next year. The game against Newcastle might be his last chance as young striker James Wilson is waiting in the wings.
