Louis Van Gaal rumoured to be the front runner for the Manchester United is the Dutch national coach at the moment. Van Gaal’s tactics generally revolve around the famous dutch 4-3-3 although he had successfully implemented a 4-2-3-1 at Bayern Munich. A hard working coach for whom the system is god,he may not be the best fit for United where players such as Rooney have enjoyed tactical freedom over the years. Wayne Rooney probably will be the biggest misfit in Van Gaal’s United as he is someone who still has to figure out his best position.Van Gaal’s teams generally don’t press intensely as other possession based teams do. His Bayern side which reached the 2010 final against Inter Milan,struggled against Inter who sat deep and picked them on the counter. Parked defences seems to be a common problem for teams who hog possession and without high intensity of pressing and players who could conjure up some magic,more and more teams will start beating you. Manchester United traditionally have never been a pressing side and there needs to be a lot of change in the training ground for this to change.

At first Van Gaal doesn’t seem to be a perfect fit for United where over the years,terms like motivation,score more than you concede were given more importance than system,tactics under Ferguson. But the players need to buck up after a disastrous year and for United to be more successful in Europe than they were under Ferguson there needs to be a change at the club.
