Phil Jones was a rock at the back as Manchester United won 1-0 against Spurs at Old Trafford. Harry Kane hardly had a sniff at goal and although there were nerves towards the end of the match, United comfortably negated the Spurs attack. Jones, finally seems to have put his injury worries behind him as he has been excellent in the past few weeks. Jose Mourinho always brings out the best from his central defenders and he has done the same with Rojo and Jones. With Smalling still injured and Eric Bailly set to go out on loan, Jones has his place assured at least for a month more. If he keeps up his fitness and continues to improve, he can finally start fulfilling the potential he has.

Sir Alex Ferguson was a big fan of Jones right from when he was at Blackburn.

Ferguson said: “Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player. I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, not matter where we play him. At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch.

At a club like Manchester United which has seen the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo et al, being the best ever player is a monumental challenge. Jones is not quite there and possibly will never be, but if he keeps improving and has some luck with injuries, he can easily have a long and solid career with both Manchester United and England.
